The shooting happened just before midnight Tuesday at the school’s campus.
A police source told CNN that there were multiple people involved.
The victim, a freshman from Kentucky, was identified as a freshman, the school said in a statement.
The suspect has been identified as 21-year-old Morgan Thompson.
He is a graduate student at the university.
The police department was on lockdown at the time of the shooting.
A university spokesman said in the statement that the shooting occurred outside the building, and that students were allowed to return to classes after hours.

Police were seen searching a neighborhood in the city of Louisville, Kentucky, just before noon.
Police said they received a 911 call about gunshots and responded to a call that a person had been shot.
There were no other injuries, according to the university’s campus police department.
A news release from the university said the student’s name was Morgan Thompson, and the name was on a list of people to be held for questioning by police.
The search was done by Louisville police, Kentucky State Police and the Kentucky State Bureau of Investigation.
